Photographs and negatives are a few of our most cherished belongings. They record our lives and memories. They preserve the faces of our loved ones who have died .They show each moment of our children development .It is awfully difficult to find that our images and negatives have been through fire damage. One is desperate to be told if there is any chance that these precious memory holders could be saved. If this tragedy has happened to you the first thing you need to do is phone a photographic restoration professional, if at all possible one who is experienced with fire damage restoration. Set an appointment to get the pics and negatives to the fire damage restoration professional as quickly as you are able to. The longer the photographs remain like this the further the fire damage they will sustain.
Picture negatives are damaged by the warmth of a fire. When too hot the layer on a negative that holds the pic gets sticky. It will adhere to any thing it makes contact with. The emulsion might crack, warp, or get smaller after undergoing fire damage. Colored can change color or fade. Black and white negatives are not as likely to become lighter. Handle the negatives with caution when transferring them after the fire damage as they will scrape easily. Soot and larger pieces of remains will bond to a hot negative often getting forever ingrained in the negative.
Photographs are also damaged by the temperature from a blaze. If the temperature of the fire is hot enough the bottom of the pic will smolder. The emulsion on the picture will turn out to be sticky and attach to any additional thing it touches Pics piled together will become adhered to each other. If the photos are in a scrap book do not attempt to remove them. Fire damaged photos could be etched quite easily when touched. When the emulsion is hot and gummy soot can get stuck in the print and the acid nature of the soot can damage and change the coloring in a print. The more the soot is in contact with the pic the more significantly it will damage the print. If water comes into contact with the print the coating will become gum- like and attach to additional prints or something else. Don't try to get the prints from each other as the coat will be removed thus removing a piece of the image from the photograph.
If the pictures are wet, from water damage leave them in plastic bags and freeze them until you have a chance to get them to the photographic restoration place. If they are dry transfer them from the fire damaged location and keep them out of harm's way until they are taken to be repaired. The fire damage restoration specialist may be able to wash and restore several of the negatives and photographs. Once the professional has restored the prints as much as can be there may be various prints that are just partially restored. There may be parts of the images that are absent from the pic. Software can recreate the missing portions of the images. The photograph can be scanned, the missing reconstructed, and a new picture made that has the full image. This is great news for everybody that adores their photographs.
